Life and Times of a Gallery Director
January 30th , 2008

Hello everyone,

after doing my recent poll [link] I thought I say a few things about what a GD does (again).

First of all, a Gallery Director is not a paid position on deviantART, GDs are volunteers, volunteers who spend a great amount of time on deviantART. We are basically the communication bridge between you , the artist, and the administration of deviantART. We are here to listen to you and your questions, suggestions and recommendations.
We are here to manage the galleries, organize them and remove miscats. We are here to keep you informed about contests and other happenings on dA. We run contests, feature artists (DDs ), write news, educate and keep you entertained.

I have no clue where the misconception comes from that GDs do hand out free subs. If a GD runs a contest that is approved by dA , dA will sponsor the prizes, but no GDs do not randomly hand out free subs and if they do then they pay for it out of their own pockets !!!

And that "free sub" --> until hell freezes over ? Well is that too much to give to a person who volunteers to this site ? I don't think so ! This is what a GD gets in return for doing a good job here and if that is your only interest when you volunteer for such a position you better stop applying right there !

And if you volunteer to get that ^in front of your username don't do it if you are only interested in pageviews and lots of attention ! This is surely not what a GD should look out for.

A Gallery Director is far from being a selfish person, a GD puts the community first and supports the artists on this site. So if you want to become a GD you need to keep all this in mind and be ready to donate a good amount of your time to this wonderful art site !

When I applied for the GD position last year I did this because I love art, support art and support deviantART. I wanted to help make this site a nice place for artists to come to, I was made aware of the above and I agreed to do the best "job" I can do. I knew I had enough time to do it and in a short time I did realize that with such a great AR team with a wonderful person like $Moonbeam13 leading this team it will be a good time. Of course there are not only fun times and sometimes there are "chores" a GD has to do , but as I said, with such a great AR team any chore will turn into no chore !

Just for your entertainment here is my daily dose of dA : In average I spend like 10-12 hours on this site, in fact I wake up , get coffee, turn on the computer and there is dA .... and it is there until I fall asleep. The boss thinks I am obsessed with kicking miscats around, I think she has a point because I kick hundreds daily. And if I kick one by mistact I admit the mistake and correct it, but that doesn't happen often. So I browse the galleries and look for overlooked photos or read your DD suggestions and then choose a DD. No a DD is not really my personal favorite, I try to judge an image by its quality and not look who is the artist behind it. What else do I do, well I try to write a few helpful journals and / or news and I hope they are helpful. Then there are the fun journals because I think that there should be a good balance between education and ranting ( and if Eloisa wants it I can easily go emo again ). I probably forgot a lot of things because most of what I do is such a routine by now.

I hope this did clear up a few things about Gallery Directors and what we do ....... and we do it because we love you the members of deviantART !

...... now back to my chores and I need more coffee !!!!!

Thank you very much for all your comments , :+fav:ss , :+favlove:ss and :+devwatch:ss
Thank you for your continuous support !

Calibrating your monitor for viewing photographs correctly:

The strip shows a range of greys from pure black to pure white.
You should be able to see a clear difference between each
shade of grey, ranging from pure black (left) and pure white (right).

Along the top of the strips are alternate patches of black and dark grey.
If it looks solid black to you (look very carefully),
your monitor's brightness setting is too low. Increase it until you can -just- perceive the difference between the grey and the black squares.

 Well said!

It's also worth noting that featuring DD's is not a requirement of being a Gallery Director, but a privilege</e>.

That was frustrating. Actually, it was one of my only gripes about the whole experience (wow I sound all jaded now!); getting notes from people saying I was a "bad GD" for not featuring a DD every single day.

I'm sorry, but I cannot reply and thank you all because of the filter which doesn't allow me to post too many messages in a row!

How simple would your life be if you had never read a book?
:iconbakin:
Aye, from what I've heard from various GDs, 'tis indeed a challenging task but each and everyone I've spoken to always said that all the work is worth it and that being a GD is a reward in itself. :)

Good journal. :)
