Description : Macro Gallery :
The definition of macro is capturing an image of a subject the same size or larger than life size on the recording media, whether that be film or digital sensor size. For example if you photograph an insect that is 2 cm (3/4 inch) long, it's image will be 2 cm (3/4 inch)long on the film or digital sensor. The smaller the recording media the smaller the subject must be. Cropping an image does not make a close-up image a macro image.
* Nature : Example for Nature : a Rose bud could be put in the Macro gallery but a Rose Bush or even a full blooming rose belongs in Animals/Plants/Nature -> Flowers/Plants gallery. Macro shots of water drops belong in macro > nature too, because water is an element and part of Nature.
* Human: Example for Human: A picture of one human eye could be put in Macro, but a close up of a face belongs in the People / Portrait gallery under Human Close-ups.
* Objects : Example for Objects : an image of a keyhole in a door could be in macro but a zoom in on a door as part of a building should go in Architecture. A flame can be a macro, but a whole candle belongs in Still Life also close-ups of figurines or dolls are usually not macro and therefore belong in the Still Life gallery.
Real macro photography is where you are working around 1:1 ratio and closer thereby giving an image on film that is equal in size or larger than the subject being photographed. The range from life size on film (1:1) up to ten times (10:1 , or even bigger) enlargement on film is be the strict definition of macro photography.
Most lenses are not capable of getting you a clear macro shot because they are not able to get close enough to the subject. Zoom lenses ( on point and shoot cameras) are usually equipped with a macro setting where they may get close enough to get a 1:4 ratio ( that means the image on film is 1/4 the size of the subject) If your shot is crisp and clear you might be able to crop the subject , but I have to point out that when shooting at anything less than 1:1 ratio we are
no longer talking macro.
Below I have put together some examples for you, the left one will show a macro shot while the right image will show the same subject but it was taken with a zoom lens. Neither the macro shot nor the shot with the zoom lens were cropped to show you the difference better . The non-macro shot will include a measuring tape so you will see the actual size of the subject and maybe understand why SIZE is important here ! ( please click each image for full view )
The first image shows a clear macro of the lens cap, the second one is a zoom in and you will see the whole lens. Very clear that the second image is no macro at all.
Another famous subject in my macro->objects gallery , cigarettes ! Well the whole pack and not even a whole cigarette is no macro simply because the subject is too large !
Well now you might ask, why the second one is no macro since the subject would fit in the size limit, right ? Well of course it is very small BUT may I remind you that macro means a magnification ratio of 1:1 or larger and that is in comparison to that banana recording media you use aka 35mm film or digital sensor on your digital camera. The second image has no such magnification ratio , without checking that zoom lens I'd say this is a 1:4 ratio and therefore no macro !
First image shows the tip of the mini corn , second one is well, the whole corn, zoomed in and nope no macro !
Well I woke up Sir Dino for this one, he is a 2 year old snapping turtle and was hibernating, but he did me the favor and actually opened one eye in the first picture, in the second one he said fuck it , either I am your macro model or I go back to sleep. Very clear the second image is again NO macro !
And another famous miscat , fruits ! The whole kiwi just is no macro, same goes for all the apples, oranges, bananas and what not ! Eat it, its healthy but keep it out of macro unless you show me detail !
The winner of all miscats in Nature would be flowers. I had to use a fake one but still the whole blossom of a flower especially lilies, roses , dahlias and whatever the names of the flowers are that bloom big.... no please please please , they belong in APN -> flowers and plants . The first shot shows a few tiny pedals from the center of that huge flower ! See it has detail, you see the fuzzy fake things !
To finish up the little lesson on what is and what is not macro , keys ! Yep another loved miscat subject, I guess its obvious why the second image is no macro ? Or do you want to argue ?
So much for this little show it in pictures example. I did not wanna show the super miscats like the cars or the landscapes and omg what not because I have no measuring tape that is so long to show the size of those miscats !
I hope you enjoyed this and will spread the world and please remember when submitting to macro that size and magnification ratio does matter !
Thank you for your time !

By the way, I've been examining my 60mm micro Nikkor lens. And the most it can do is 1:1. The range is 10:1 down to 1:1. But no more than that. Wish I'd known that when I bought it, but I was too excited to do my shopping research. And it's a great macro "starter" lens.
