AR News - Conceptual Photography i
January 18th , 2008

Hello everyone,

As many of you have already noticed, I have taken over the Photography-> Conceptual Gallery since last week. I will try to follow in the footsteps of the former GD and brilliant Conceptual Genius `Davenit. In my opinion he is one of the best conceptual photographers on this planet and his gallery truly reflects this.

As for general AR News, there will be lost of new things coming from AR in this year, so keep your eyes and ears open. As always, I do advise you to watch your GDs that manage the galleries you submit to, this way you are always up to date when new things are introduced or if there are any changes.

On the bottom of this newsletter you will find a link section to other AR related News & journals from other galleries.

" In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work. When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art...."
*Sol Lewitt

What does this mean ? It means that in conceptual photography the actual picture comes secondary. First there is an idea or call it concept that you have created in your mind, usually based on a feeling or experience, for example sadness, or a death in your family. You want to demonstrate and express this with a photograph, to share your experience or feeling and portray it, so the viewer can feel the same by looking on your picture. Once you have achieved that the viewer feels the same you do, then you have created a conceptual photograph. Creating such a piece of Art does not necessarily require to have a person as a model, in fact most of the times portraits are just portraits with little conceptual ideas behind them, most of the times if done right, using real objects can be used to achieve a better effect. It aways helps to add a description to your art so the viewer can understand why you have portrayed your concept in this specific way.

Keep in mind, taking a random shot and dreaming an idea into it, is NOT what conceptual art is about ! First comes the idea / concept that you created in your mind and the actual picture comes secondary.

`Davenit has talked about Conceptual Art many times before and as a tribute to his great work I will feature you some of his conceptual work here in this article and I hope it will help you to understand how conceptual art is created and how much work does go into it before it is finished Art.

*edit: the above fits more into Conceptual Studio work, of course there is other conceptual work where you need to be "fast thinking" especially when it comes to Conceptual work in Nature or Street photography ( just as an example) more about this at a later point.

Thank you !

`Davenit

Calibrating your monitor for viewing photographs correctly:

The strip shows a range of greys from pure black to pure white.
You should be able to see a clear difference between each
shade of grey, ranging from pure black (left) and pure white (right).

Along the top of the strips are alternate patches of black and dark grey.
If it looks solid black to you (look very carefully),
your monitor's brightness setting is too low. Increase it until you can -just- perceive the difference between the grey and the black squares.
