AR News: Macro Photography November II
November 17th , 2007

Hello everyone,

below you find some quick infos on macro photography. I will use the AR Newsletter to post such quick infos and release another news article to a later date.

Also make sure to check out the AR News: Photography (November) for general photography updates and the featured news at the bottom of this journal.

DD suggestions : Since there is a problem with notes, you need to copy and paste my user name in the recipient field to send me a note or if you want you can also send me the DD suggestions per email for now until this issue is fixed hellfirediva@deviantart.com BUT you need to write "DD suggestion" in the subject field otherwise I will delete the email. Thanks !

Aspect Ratio

The aspect ratio of a camera is the ratio of the length of the sides of
the film or digital sensor. A traditional 35mm film frame is 36mm wide and
24mm high. This has an aspect ratio of 36:24, which equals 3:2. Some
digital cameras use the same aspect ratio for their digital images. For
example most digital SLR (single lens reflex) cameras have a 3:2 aspect
ratio but most consumer level digital cameras (point and shoot cameras)
use a 4:3 aspect ratio for their images.

Traditionally, macro photography is defined as any photo in which the
subject size has a 1:1 ratio, or greater, with the size on the film or sensor.
This means that the image of the subject on the film/sensor is the same size,
or larger, as the real life subject. So if you are working with traditional film
( or dSLR full frame sensors that have a 3:2 aspect ratio) the subject has to fit
on the 35mm film/sensor which is only 36mm long and 24mm high !!!!

Also, a macro lens can only produce a true macro image at it's minimum focusing distance

Macro Photography Subjects

Any small object can be a subject for macro photography. A good macro photo reveals details
and textures in the object that can't be observed with normal photography or by casual
observation. For photographers just beginning to experiment with macro photography,
here are some possible subject ideas:

- butterfly wings
- clockwork gears
- feathers
- fern fronds
- flower petals
- insects
- small sea shells
- spider webs
- Water drops

While nature provides the most obvious subjects for macro photography,
common items around the house or parts of the human body are also
possible subjects.

Calibrating your monitor for viewing photographs correctly:

The strip shows a range of greys from pure black to pure white.
You should be able to see a clear difference between each
shade of grey, ranging from pure black (left) and pure white (right).

Along the top of the strips are alternate patches of black and dark grey.
If it looks solid black to you (look very carefully),
your monitor's brightness setting is too low. Increase it until you can -just- perceive the difference between the grey and the black squares.
